Paradoxically, while I have sufficient self-esteem to think that my art surpasses the mere decorative and ornamental, I don't mind matching your decor. Some artists are so full of themselves that they find that idea abhorant. But many people find it hard to find a painting that is the right size or color combination for a room. And I find it interesting and challenging to design a painting that compliments both the dynamic of a particular space and the owner's needs - and I can do so without compromising the integrity of the work.
I like very much the experience of getting to know personally the person who purchases my work. I meet them at their home or office and while we go over all the technical information such as size and color and we browse through my portfolio to discover what the client likes in my work, I get in touch with the person and get a feel for the energy dynamics of the room in which the painting will hang. This entails much more than the lighting in the room and the flow of traffic through the space, although these are important.
In a business situation these energy dynamics can be a critical consideration. For example, in a waiting room you want a painting that helps to calm and relax. Behind an executive’s desk you may want something authoritative, but sometimes, if that is too confrontational, you may prefer to soften the impact by hanging a painting that inspires confidence.
At home, the painting best suited for a living room that hosts parties would by quite different from the one suited for a living room primarily for quiet repose or meditation.
It is not just how I place paint on canvas that makes me an artist. As I get a feel for what is wanted, I get intuitive impressions as to how the painting will look and feel and influence its environment and, of course, its owner. Putting all this information together - the physical requirements and my esoteric impressions - can be very challenging and satisfying and yield spectacular results.
It’s gratifying to know as I work on a painting that it has a place to hang and satisfies someone's need. The completion of the painting is an ongoing process of interaction between my experience of what seems appropriate for your situation and what evolves on the canvas. Every painting is unique and original, although it may be similar to another from my portfolio that you like and we think would work in your space.
As long as you resonate with my work in general, I can come up with a painting that has the right feel, has the right colors in the right balance, has the right energy dynamic, that is the right size, that is just right for you and your space.
If you prefer, I can work with your interior designer or architect.
Completion takes between two weeks to two months depending on the painting’s size and complexity, and my previous commitments.
When the painting is finished, I will email photos to you so that you can approve the final painting before I deliver or ship it to you.
When the painting is approved, I will deliver it personally or by insured carrier, crated for safe transport and delivery. Crating and shipping are variable additional charges.
Travel expenses to locations farther than 50 miles from my studio are extra. I am willing to travel round trip to any location worldwide at nothing more than the cost of my expenses plus a reasonable amount more for my time.
I like to quip that I charge by the square inch - and that is not far off. Small costs less, large costs more. A small custom abstract painting can be commissioned for as little as $500 and a wall-sized painting can run to several thousand dollars. Complexity of the painting is a consideration too. So I refrain from quoting commission fees until some discussion of what you want has occurred.
A ½ non-refundable deposit of the total commission fee is required to start the procedure.
The balance, including all additional expenses (framing, travel, crating, shipping and handling, installation) is payable COD upon delivery of the painting.
